A painted mug is only as useful as the glaze and the firing. Studio underglaze plus a food-safe clear, fired in a kiln (usually cone 06 / about 999°C in paint-your-own shops), can go on the rim and inside. Oven-bake acrylic and craft “ceramic paint” are decorative: keep them off the drinking rim, hand-wash, and do not microwave. Gold luster and pearl overglazes are often not dishwasher-safe even after a kiln firing.
Pick one design by your brush control, not a photo of a factory mug. If your lines wobble, choose terrazzo, splashes, dots, cheetah, watercolor, or a loose ombre—those hide shaky strokes. If you can hold a liner, do florals, tiles, or a monogram. Wipe the foot dry before firing so the mug does not glue to the kiln shelf, and ask the studio which clears are food-safe on the lip.
1. Minimalist Line Art Faces
One continuous face on the outside only; keep the interior and rim in food-safe clear with no color if you are unsure of the underglaze. Kiln, not oven. Pencil first, then a liner brush; wobbles read as style if you commit to one thickness. Dishwasher: yes after a proper studio fire, unless you add gold afterward.
2. Pastel Polka Dot Dreams
Dots hide uneven pressure better than outlines. Use the back of a brush or a pencil eraser for consistent circles; three coats of underglaze. Kiln + food-safe clear on the whole mug, including inside. Oven-bake dots will peel in a dishwasher. This is a good first studio piece.

Cobalt on white bisque is the old dinnerware formula: food-safe when covered with a studio clear and kiln-fired. Loose sprays of leaves hide shaky petals better than a tight rose. Three thin coats, not one puddle. Dishwasher: generally yes; avoid stacking so the handle does not chip.
6. Modern Geometric Color Blocks
Painter’s tape on dry bisque gives the only clean blocks; freehand blocks show every wobble. Burnish tape, three coats, pull tape before the last coat skins. Kiln. Tape glue residue can make glaze crawl—wipe with a barely damp sponge. Interior: clear only.
7. Cozy Autumn Leaf Scatter
Scattered leaves in two oranges and a brown hide size mistakes; a single “perfect” maple does not. Stamp with a cut sponge if your liner shakes. Kiln, food-safe clear. Fine for daily tea. Dishwasher OK if no luster veins.

Irregular spots are the point—this is the print for messy brushes. Tan field, brown blobs, thin black C-shapes, not identical. Kiln. Exterior only is safest. Dishwasher: yes after clear; the black outline is underglaze, not Sharpie (Sharpie burns or washes off).
17. Vintage Strawberry Vines
Vines that wander hide placement errors; round berries need three coats of red. Keep fruit off the rim. Kiln, food-safe clear. Daily tea mug. Dishwasher fine without gold seeds.

The best messy-brush design: random chips in three colors on a cream field. Flick or dab; do not outline every shard. Kiln, clear. Food-safe on the outside and, with clear, the inside. Dishwasher: yes. This is the studio project to do if you are nervous.
21. Simple Monogram Initials
Letters show every shake—use a printout and graphite transfer, or a vinyl stencil. Three coats. Kiln. A monogram on the outside, clear inside. Dishwasher OK. Do not use oven-bake paint for a mug that will be gifted as drinkware.
22. Ocean Wave Crests
Layered blues with a dry-brush white crest; uneven waves look more like water. Kiln. Keep foam off the inner rim. Dishwasher: yes. Mixing real sea glass or glitter into craft glue is not a kiln glaze and will not be food-safe.
23. Rainbow Arch Motifs
Tape a half-circle or use a bowl to mark the arch. Thick bands hide wobble; hairline rainbows do not. Some reds and oranges are weak—three coats. Kiln, clear. Interior white. Dishwasher: yes if all colors are underglaze, not markers.

Repeat one simple star, not a full zellij. A stencil or stamp helps; freehand medallions punish mistakes. Cobalt or teal underglaze, kiln. Interior clear. Dishwasher: yes. If you cannot keep symmetry, switch to terrazzo instead.
27. Holographic Pearl Glaze
Mother-of-pearl and iridescent studio glazes are often not food-safe on the rim and often fail in the dishwasher. Use them on the exterior only, keep the lip in a standard food-safe clear, and hand-wash. They need a kiln, not a kitchen oven. If the studio does not stock a food-safe pearl, skip it—craft holographic varnish is not for coffee.
